Saint Nicholas Church, Lutheran church in Gatchina, Russia.
Saint Nicholas Church is a Lutheran church in the classical style, standing on Prospekt 25 Oktyabrya in central Gatchina, Russia. The building has a symmetrical facade with clean lines and balanced proportions typical of early 19th-century Russian classicism.
Architect Aleksey Baykov designed and built the church between 1825 and 1828 for Gatchina's Lutheran community. It was later listed as a federal cultural monument and placed under state protection.
The church belongs to the Evangelical Lutheran Church of Ingria and still holds regular services today. Inside, the space is spare and orderly, reflecting the Lutheran tradition of simple worship without ornament.
The church sits on one of Gatchina's main streets and is easy to reach on foot from the town center. Several other historical buildings are close by, so it fits naturally into a walk through the area.
The church received its federal monument status through a presidential decree in 1995, which is an unusually direct form of recognition in Russia. This means that any change to the building requires special government approval.
