Bolshoi Theatre, Opera house in Theatre Square, Moscow, Russia.

The Bolshoi Theatre stands with a neoclassical facade adorned by an eight-columned portico and houses both opera and ballet performances in its 1,740-seat auditorium.

Founded in 1776 under Catherine II's patronage, the current building opened in 1825 after previous structures were destroyed by fires in 1805 and during Napoleon's invasion.

The Bolshoi Ballet includes over 200 dancers and maintains a training academy, presenting classical performances such as Swan Lake's first staging in 1877.

The theatre offers guided tours that reveal architectural details, while regular performances occur throughout the year with advance ticket purchases recommended.

The theatre underwent a substantial renovation between 2005 and 2011, costing $1.1 billion to restore its original acoustics and decorative elements.
