Budyonnovsk, Administrative center in Stavropol Krai, Russia
Budyonnovsk is a town in southern Russia's Stavropol Krai, situated at 115 meters (377 feet) elevation and extending over roughly 62 square kilometers (24 square miles). The town comprises several residential neighborhoods with a compact center, public buildings, and broad, flat streets lined with low-rise houses.
Armenian settlers from Derbent founded the settlement in 1799, and it later endured German occupation from August 1942 to January 1943 during World War II. In 1995, Chechen militants seized a hospital in the town, an event remembered throughout Russia.
The town's name honors Marshal Semyon Budyonny, a cavalry commander celebrated during the Russian Civil War, and was adopted in 1935. Churches, a mosque, and public squares give the center a traditional provincial character that visitors can explore on foot.
The town holds separate administrative status while serving as the center for the surrounding district. Postal codes from 356800 to 356809 cover different neighborhoods and facilities.
A Russian Aerospace Forces air base sits 14 kilometers (9 miles) northwest of town, adding strategic importance to the southern region. Locals sometimes spot transport aircraft overhead, a reminder of the military presence nearby.
