Kirovo-Chepetsk sits where the Cheptsa flows into the Vyatka, roughly 20 kilometers east of Kirov. The town lies 140 meters above sea level and serves as an administrative center within Kirov Oblast.
The settlement began as the village of Ust-Cheptsa in the mid-15th century near the river mouth. In 1955 it officially gained town status and adopted its current name.
The town's ice hockey club started playing in the 1950s under a different name before becoming Olimpiya. Players from this team have regularly joined the national squad over the decades.
The town sits about half an hour east of Kirov by road and is easy to reach by car or bus. Visitors will find basic services and a few places to stay in the center.
The 50th meridian east passes directly through town, marking a geographic reference point. This line divides the area symbolically in half and appears on some local maps.
