Kinel'-Cherkassy, village in Kinel-Cherkassky District, Russia
Kinel'-Cherkassy is a large village in the Samara region that spreads across both banks of the Big Kinel River, located about 30 kilometers west of the town of Kinel. The settlement features traditional wooden and brick houses, streets with local shops and cafes, a historic market area, and an old church whose roots reach back to the 19th century.
The village was founded in 1744 when Ukrainian settlers known as Cherkass arrived to secure the eastern borders of the Moscow Tsardom following a royal decree in 1739. Originally organized as a sloboda, a settlement free from serfdom, it developed by the 19th century into an important trade and manufacturing center with strong connections to other towns.
The name combines the Cherkass, Ukrainian settlers from the 18th century, with the Kinel River where they built their homes. The village keeps alive cultural traditions from these early inhabitants as well as from Chuvash, Mordva, and Tatar groups who arrived later, seen in local customs, food, and stories.
The village has basic supplies in local shops and cafes, but visitors looking for larger purchases should go to nearby towns. The streets are quiet and suited for leisurely walks, so comfortable shoes are recommended.
The village is known for sweet tomatoes grown by residents in greenhouses without chemicals, ripening mostly on the plant itself. These tomatoes draw buyers from neighboring regions and are so popular that some sellers deceptively market imported tomatoes as local.
