Peoples' Friendship University of Russia, International university in south Moscow, Russia.
The Peoples' Friendship University of Russia is an international higher education institution located in the southern part of Moscow, on the edge of Konkovo District. The campus covers a large area next to a natural park and offers teaching buildings, laboratories, dormitories and sports complexes for thousands of international students.
The university opened in February 1960 to train students from developing nations during the Cold War, as part of Soviet efforts to build ties with emerging countries in Asia, Africa and Latin America. The institution received state recognition fifteen years after its foundation for educating specialists from these regions.
Students from all continents study side by side in an environment where dozens of languages echo through hallways and lecture rooms every day. The library holds collections in many non-Russian languages to support learners from Africa, Asia and Latin America.
The campus area sits next to walking paths in an adjacent natural park, allowing visitors to find quiet corners between the academic buildings. Passageways between faculties are well marked with multilingual signage to ease navigation around the large site.
The environmental science faculty here was the first of its kind in the country and focused on climate research and marine ecosystem protection. Research teams work on field studies across Russian natural areas and collaboration with international partners on different continents.
