Nogaysky District, Republic of Dagestan, Municipal district in northern Republic of Dagestan, Russia.
Nogaysky District is a municipal district in northwestern Dagestan on dry steppe terrain. The region spreads across open land with scattered settlements, with Terekli-Mekteb serving as the main administrative center and largest town.
The district was established in 1928 and shifted between different administrative regions before becoming part of Dagestan in 1957. Its name changed from Karanogai to Nogaisky in 1966 to reflect the local population.
The Nogai people form the majority and shape daily life throughout the region. You can see their traditions reflected in how villages are organized and how people live.
Most services are concentrated in Terekli-Mekteb where the main administrative offices are located. Roads across the flat steppe terrain are generally straightforward to navigate.
The region is home to descendants of the Nogai Horde, a historical nomadic people whose presence shaped the identity of these grasslands. This connection to steppe culture makes it a rare window into preserved nomadic heritage.
