Unzha River, River system in Vologda and Kostroma regions, Russia

The Unzha is a river in the Vologda and Kostroma regions of central Russia that runs through forests and flat lowlands before joining the Volga River. Its course alternates between wide open stretches and narrower sections lined with dense woodland.

For centuries, the Unzha was used to float timber from the northern forests down toward more populated regions in the south. When railways and roads arrived in the area, the river gradually lost its role as a main trade route.

Along the Unzha, small villages still follow a rhythm tied to the river, with fishing remaining part of everyday life for many residents. Traditional wooden houses can still be spotted close to the banks in some stretches.

The lower sections of the river can be navigated by small boats, though water levels change noticeably with the seasons. Those who prefer to explore on foot will find easier access points near villages along the banks.

One bank of the Unzha tends to be high and steep while the opposite bank is low and marshy, giving the river a different appearance depending on which side you stand on. This kind of asymmetry is fairly uncommon for a river of this size in the region.
