Neftegorsk, Sakhalin Oblast, Former oil settlement in Sakhalin Oblast, Russia.
Neftegorsk was an oil settlement built with multi-story apartment blocks arranged closely together near extraction facilities in northern Sakhalin. The residential area consisted of standard Soviet four-to-five-story buildings that formed a compact urban layout.
Founded in 1963 as Vostok, the settlement was renamed Neftegorsk and developed into an oil extraction center in one of Russia's most remote regions. It grew steadily as an industrial hub over the following decades.
Residents were primarily oil workers and their families who adapted to the harsh climate and remote location. Daily life centered around work in the extraction facilities and the bonds formed within this small industrial community.
The settlement was remote and accessible only by limited transportation options. Infrastructure included schools, medical facilities, and utilities that served the local population and supported the oil operations.
A powerful 7.1 magnitude earthquake struck in May 1995, destroying the settlement entirely and causing nearly 2,000 deaths. The site was abandoned afterward and became a landscape of ruins that stands as a stark reminder of the earthquake's devastation.
