Bureya Nature Reserve

Bureya Nature Reserve spans roughly 358,000 hectares across the Dusse-Alin mountain range, with terrain ranging from mountain tundra at higher elevations to dense boreal forests in the valleys. The landscape combines spruce-fir woodlands, cedar thickets, rivers, and mountain lakes.

The government established this conservation area in 1987 to protect the natural ecosystems of the Bureya River basin. The designation created a protected space where the landscape and wildlife could develop without human extraction or modification.

Scientists use this space to study approximately 190 bird species, with about 89 nesting within its boundaries each year. The reserve holds significance as a research hub for understanding the region's ornithological diversity.

Access happens mainly through helicopter tours or guided rafting trips on the Right Bureya River, since there are no internal roads or permanent facilities. Visitors should come prepared for remote conditions and bring appropriate outdoor gear.

The reserve protects original spruce-fir and cedar forests that have never experienced commercial logging. This absence of resource extraction makes it a rare example of a forest landscape shaped only by natural processes.
