Kstovsky District

Kstovsky District is a municipal district in Nizhny Novgorod Oblast that spans around 1,225 square kilometers (470 sq mi). The area features agricultural land, forests, and industrial zones, with the southern bank of the Volga River forming a natural boundary.

The district was established as an administrative unit in January 1929, taking on its current territorial form. It contains the Church of Our Lady of Kazan located in Veliky Vrag village, a heritage structure built in 1792.

The district includes fourteen administrative settlements, from urban communities to rural villages, each reflecting different aspects of Russian regional life. This mix shows how traditional countryside patterns exist alongside more developed areas.

The western sections connect well to Nizhny Novgorod through developed roads including the Moscow-Kazan Highway and public transportation services. Eastern and southern areas are less developed, so having your own transport helps when exploring the wider district.

The district contains an unfinished nuclear heating plant near Fedyakovo village, its construction halted after the Chernobyl disaster in the 1980s. This abandoned facility stands today as a quiet reminder of how that event changed Soviet energy plans.
