Moscow Metallurgical Plant, Metallurgical plant in eastern Moscow, Russia.
The Moscow Metallurgical Plant is an industrial complex in eastern Moscow housing steel production facilities that manufacture specialized alloys and stainless steel. The site employed electric furnaces to produce these metal products.
Jules Goujon founded the plant in 1883 as a wire workshop and gradually developed it into a major steel producer. By 1913 it had become one of Russia's leading metal manufacturers.
The plant manufactured the specialized chromium-nickel steel used in the iconic Soviet sculpture 'Worker and Kolkhoz Woman' created in 1937. This role connected industrial production directly to major artistic projects of that era.
The site is located in eastern Moscow and operated as a sprawling industrial complex with multiple buildings and production areas. Visitors should know the facility closed in 2011 and is no longer active.
The plant remained operational throughout World War II, manufacturing armor components despite its location near the Kremlin. This proximity to the political center revealed how central the factory was to Soviet military production.
