Kommunarka, Urban settlement in Sosenskoye Settlement, Russia.
Kommunarka is an urban settlement in the Sosenskoye district at the southwestern edge of Moscow. The community sits at an elevation of approximately 173 meters and covers an area now characterized by residential blocks and new infrastructure.
The settlement received official posyolok status in 1957 after previously belonging to the Krasnaya Pakhra administrative district. During the Stalinist period in the 1930s, the area served as an execution and burial site for many victims of political persecution.
The settlement name translates across multiple languages, including Камунарка in Belarusian and Коммунарка in Chechen, reflecting the multicultural nature of the region.
The settlement is served by the Sokolnicheskaya line of the Moscow Metro with a station that opened in 2019 and offers a direct connection to the center. Visitors should keep in mind that this is primarily a residential area suitable mainly for those passing through or with a specific purpose.
The site contains mass graves from the 1930s, including the remains of defendants from the March 1938 Moscow Show Trial. Today a memorial stone and a small chapel stand to recall these dark events of Soviet history.
