Sportivnaya, Metro station in Petrogradsky District, Saint Petersburg, Russia
Sportivnaya is a metro station in the Petrogradsky District of Saint Petersburg, built on two separate levels, each serving trains in one direction. A long underground corridor with moving walkways connects the two levels and also links two different parts of the city.
The station opened in 1997 as part of an expansion of the Frunzensko-Primorskaya metro line in Saint Petersburg. The two-level design was chosen to address the technical challenges posed by the site's location between two districts.
The name reflects the sports facilities nearby that define the neighborhood. Visitors notice decorative mosaics with athletic themes that mark the station's connection to the local sporting culture.
The station has entrances on both sides of the transfer corridor, but wheelchair access is only possible at certain points. The walkway passage can get very busy during rush hours, so traveling at off-peak times makes movement through the corridor much easier.
Sportivnaya is the only metro station outside Washington D.C. that stacks two full platforms inside a single vaulted chamber. This construction approach is extremely rare worldwide and draws the attention of engineers and transit enthusiasts who visit specifically to see it.
