Pechengsky District spans 8,662 square kilometers along the Barents Sea coast, sharing borders with Finland and Norway in the northwestern region of Murmansk Oblast.
The district gained its current status in 1945 after Finland ceded the territory to the Soviet Union following the Moscow Armistice of 1944.
