The institution was founded in 1943 through a resolution of the Council of People's Commissars, with Vassili Grigorievich Sakhnovski appointed as the first rector. The school emerged during World War II to continue the theater tradition of the Moscow Art Theatre and train new generations.
Training follows principles Konstantin Stanislavski developed for psychologically credible performance, now used in theaters worldwide. Graduates later work on stages, in film productions, and on Russian television, where their intensive preparation is often easy to recognize.
The building on Tverskaya Street 6 is open daily from 8 AM to midnight, giving students access throughout the day for classes, rehearsals, and performances. Visitors can attend public performances by young actors showing their skills in small productions.
The entrance examination attracts up to thirty applicants for each available spot in the acting program, showing the high demand for this training. Those accepted go through intensive multiyear schooling that also includes physical fitness and voice training.
