Arts Square

This square in Saint Petersburg brings together neoclassical buildings that house major cultural institutions like the Russian Museum, Mikhailovsky Theatre, and Philharmonia. The structures frame an open plaza where grand facades and columns create a unified architectural composition.

Karl Rossi designed this space in the 1820s, transforming an empty area into a planned square centered on the Mikhailovsky Palace. The arrangement of buildings around this focal point established the area as a cultural hub that remains important today.

This square serves as the creative heart of the city, where museums, theaters, and concert halls sit side by side. Visitors notice how the buildings frame the space and draw people toward performances and exhibitions throughout the year.

The square connects easily to Nevsky Prospect through Italian Street and sits near the Grand Hotel Europe for convenient arrival. You can walk through the entire area, with clear entrances marking each institution.

Between 1920 and 1940, the square was named after Ferdinand Lassalle, a German socialist, before receiving its current name. This earlier naming reflects the political shifts that Russia experienced during that period.
