Владичний двір

The Vladichny Court is a complex of multiple chambers and halls located within the stone walls of the Novgorod Kremlin and displays medieval architectural elements. The rooms vary in size and connect through corridors and stairways that show visitors how space was organized in a historic administrative center.

Construction began in the late 11th century when this structure was built as the residence and administrative center for bishops who oversaw religious affairs in medieval Novgorod. Over the centuries, the complex underwent multiple expansions and changes, merging different building phases and architectural styles.

This place served as a key spiritual center for centuries, and visitors can still sense how rooms were organized for religious and administrative purposes. The collections display religious objects and manuscripts that reveal the importance of this location in the Orthodox tradition of northwestern Russia.

The rooms can be explored along marked pathways, with an overview map available at the entrance to help with orientation. The best time to visit is in the morning, when fewer visitors are present and the spaces feel less crowded.

A special highlight is the Chamber of Facets from 1433, the oldest surviving Russian palace building with original Gothic vaulting. This room shows a rare blend of medieval Russian and European architecture that is difficult to find elsewhere.
