Novgorod Kremlin

The Novgorod Kremlin is a medieval fortress sitting on the Volkhov River with thick stone walls and nine towers. Inside you find the Cathedral of Holy Wisdom, several other churches, and museum exhibits that show how people lived here over centuries.

The fortress was first mentioned in 1044, and wooden structures gave way to stone walls in the early 1300s under local rulers. Foreign builders later strengthened and improved the walls to better defend the city.

The Cathedral of Holy Wisdom stands as the spiritual heart where locals have gathered for centuries. Its presence shapes how people move through the fortress, marking it as a place of deep religious importance to the city.

You can walk around the entire perimeter and enjoy views of the river from different angles. The paths inside are easy to follow, but dress warmly as it gets cold and windy near the water.

Inside the fortress walls stands an eternal flame memorial that honors those who defended the city. This monument sits quietly away from the main crowds, revealing another layer of what the place means to people here.
