Voronin Tower
Voronin Tower is a fortified stone structure in Smolensk that once formed part of the city's defensive walls. It features thick masonry with narrow windows and battlements at the top, characteristic of medieval military construction.
The fortress was constructed between 1595 and 1602 to defend the city against invasions from the west. The tower survived the Napoleonic Wars in the early 1800s, when much of the fortification walls were destroyed.
The tower's name comes from a local family with historical ties to the fortification. Visitors can observe the stone craftsmanship and narrow windows that reveal its past defensive purpose.
The tower is located near central Smolensk and is easily accessible on foot without needing special directions. You can explore the area at your own pace since no ticket is required for outside viewing.
The tower was originally part of a 6.5-kilometer-long fortress system, of which only fragments remain today. Most other towers were destroyed, making the Voronin Tower a rare survivor of this ambitious military architecture.
