Zaaltarnaya Tower, Fortified tower in Smolensk, Russia
The Zaaltarnaya Tower is a 16-sided fortified structure built as part of the massive Smolensk fortress wall, embodying traditional Russian defensive architecture. The building shows characteristic features of fortress engineering with its geometric form and sturdy stonework.
The fortification was built in 1609 and suffered major destruction during the Polish siege of 1611 when fire completely destroyed its wooden structures. This siege was one of the most severe events in the fortress's early history.
The tower takes its name from its position behind the altar of an ancient wooden church that Saint Abraham built in the 13th century. This connection between religious and military structures shows how spiritual life was interwoven with the city's defenses.
The tower can be examined from Marshal Zhukov Street where its exterior is easily visible. The interior features metal beams marking different floor levels if access becomes available.
Underground passages and trenches from the 1633 siege under Shein's forces remain visible near the base. These remnants reveal the siege tactics used during that period of conflict.
