Monastery of John the Evangelist in Makarovka, Orthodox monastery in Makarovka, Russia.
The Monastery of John the Evangelist is an Orthodox monastic complex in the village of Makarovka, a short distance from Saransk in the Republic of Mordovia. It comprises a cathedral, a bell tower, and several churches spread across a large enclosed grounds.
The site was originally part of an estate owned by a noble family that had moved to the region from Moscow. Over time, the religious community that settled there grew and the monastery became an established center of Orthodox life in Mordovia.
The monastery is named after John the Evangelist, one of the twelve apostles, and remains a living place of Orthodox worship today. On feast days, the grounds fill with pilgrims from across Mordovia who come to attend services and visit the spring.
The monastery has a pilgrim center that offers rooms and meals, making it possible to stay for more than a day. Visitors should wear modest clothing when entering the churches, and it is worth arriving early to follow the morning services.
A natural spring next to St. Nicholas Church is considered sacred by many visitors who come specifically to collect its water. The spring sits away from the main path and is easy to miss if you follow only the route to the cathedral.
