Памятник Ушакову, Naval monument in Saransk, Russia
The Ushakov Monument is a bronze statue standing on a granite base in front of the cathedral, reaching about 4 meters in height without its pedestal. It sits directly on Cathedral Square facing the Saint Theodore Ushakov Cathedral, the main Orthodox church of Saransk.
Plans for this monument began in 1913 under Tsar Nicholas II, but construction stopped due to the revolution of 1917 and remained suspended for several decades. The project was later resumed and eventually completed.
The statue depicts Admiral Ushakov dressed in full military naval attire with decorations, holding a spyglass while his hand reaches toward his sword. This portrayal reflects how the community honors his role as an important naval commander.
The monument sits in the city center and is easy to reach on foot from surrounding areas by heading toward Cathedral Square. The location is well-marked and the plaza itself offers plenty of space for visitors to walk around and view the statue from different angles.
The monument received official recognition in 2002 as a structure of republican significance and was blessed by Patriarch Alexius II of Moscow. This religious and state approval made it a meaningful site for the local community.
