Republican Erzya Museum, Art museum in Saransk, Russia.
The Republican Erzya Museum is an art museum in Saransk, the capital of the Republic of Mordovia in Russia, dedicated mainly to sculpture and painting. The collection brings together the works of sculptor Stepan Erzia and paintings by Russian masters from different periods.
The museum was founded in 1941, though the war delayed its opening to the public by several years. It took on its current name in the 1950s, after Stepan Erzia's works brought from Argentina entered the permanent collection.
The museum is named after the sculptor Stepan Dmitrievich Erzia, who carved many of his figures from Argentine woods like quebracho and algarrobo. These dark, dense materials give the sculptures a raw, almost living quality that visitors notice as soon as they enter the main hall.
The museum stands on Communist Street near the Cathedral of St. Theodor Ushakov and is easy to reach on foot from the city center. It is open Tuesday through Sunday and closed on Mondays.
Stepan Erzia spent nearly three decades in Argentina and created most of his work there before returning to the Soviet Union in 1951. He brought around 180 sculptures with him on the return journey, unwilling to leave his work behind.
