Smolny National Park, National park in Mordovia, Russia
Smolny National Park is a protected forest area in Mordovia that covers roughly 36,500 hectares across northeastern terrain. The park contains deciduous woodlands, wet marshland zones, and the Alatyr River flowing through its center.
The park was established in 1995 to protect the natural forests and wetlands of the East European forest steppe region. This protection effort marked an important moment in safeguarding the area from further land use changes.
The park's museum displays explain how the region's forests and water systems have shaped local understanding of nature. These exhibits help visitors see the relationship between the landscape and the people who live near it.
The park offers recreational areas with picnic spots where visitors can rest and enjoy the surroundings. Swimming in designated water areas is permitted and seasonal mushroom foraging is an activity available throughout the park.
More than 80 small streams and 185 kilometers of seasonal waterways cut through the park creating varied water habitats. These water networks support 206 bird species and diverse aquatic environments that are uncommon in forest regions.
