Mordovia, Republic in Eastern European Russia.
Mordovia spreads across 25,900 square kilometers between the Volga upland in the east and the Oka-Don lowland in the west with numerous rivers and lakes.
The territory came under Russian control in 1552 after the fall of the Kazan Khanate and transformed into an autonomous republic during the Soviet period in 1934.
The population includes Russians, Mordvins divided into Erzya and Moksha groups speaking distinct Finno-Ugric languages, and Tatars practicing Orthodox Christianity.
The capital Saransk contains manufacturing facilities for machinery, furniture, paper products, and wood chemicals, while the rural areas focus on cattle raising and grain cultivation.
The region maintains five hundred lakes within its borders and experiences temperature variations from minus 11 degrees Celsius in winter to 19 degrees in summer.
