Oroktoysky Bridge, Vehicle suspension bridge in Altai Mountains, Russia.
The Oroktoysky Bridge is a vehicle viaduct crossing the Katun River in the Altai Mountains, spanning 120 meters overall with a main span of 70 meters. The structure is supported by concrete pylons anchored firmly into the black lava cliffs along the riverbed.
The current structure was completed in 1997 under engineer W. L. Yanykanov and replaced an earlier crossing destroyed by flooding. This reconstruction was needed to restore transport connections between the isolated communities.
The bridge links two small settlements where residents once used cable cars to transport goods and animals across the river, a method that deeply shaped local life and movement patterns.
The bridge accommodates single-direction vehicle traffic and sits roughly 40 kilometers from the Chuya Highway, connecting settlements separated by mountainous terrain. Visitors should be aware that the location is remote and the crossing can be challenging in poor weather conditions.
The river below reaches depths of around 70 meters and flows through a corridor of black volcanic rocks formed by ancient eruptions. This striking geological feature marks one of the most dramatic sections of the valley.
