Korbu Waterfall, Natural waterfall in Altai Republic, Russia
Korbu Waterfall is a waterfall in the Altai State Natural Biosphere Reserve, where the Bolshaya Korbu River drops near the eastern shore of Lake Teletskoye. A short wooden walkway leads to a viewing platform positioned close to the base of the falls.
The waterfall was designated a natural monument in 1996 and later became part of the Altai State Natural Biosphere Reserve. This status placed the surrounding land under formal protection, limiting human activity in the area.
The name Korbu comes from an Altai word meaning shrubs or young tree shoots, which describes the dense plant life surrounding the falls. Visitors walking along the wooden path can see this vegetation up close, as ferns and mosses cover the rocks on both sides of the stream.
The waterfall can only be reached by boat from Artybash village on the northern tip of Lake Teletskoye, since no road leads directly to the site. Sturdy footwear is a good idea, as the wooden walkways can become slippery when wet.
In winter the waterfall freezes into a tall ice wall that local climbers use for practice. In summer the spray keeps the surrounding rocks constantly damp, creating conditions where mosses and ferns stay green even during dry spells.
