Teletskoe, Protected lake in Altai Republic, Russia
Teletskoe is a protected lake in the northeastern Altai Mountains of Altai Republic, Russia. It stretches 77 kilometers (48 miles) between forested slopes and reaches 325 meters (1,066 feet) at its deepest point.
Scientists from the Institute of Taxonomy and Ecology of Animals set up a field station on its shores in the mid-20th century. Research has focused on regional wildlife and ecosystem protection ever since.
Locals call this body of water Golden Lake, referring to a story about someone who threw precious metal into the depths when food ran out. Fishermen and herders still use its shores today, just as their ancestors did for generations.
The best access is through small settlements along the shores, where boats are available for tours. Water temperature stays cool even in summer, so bring warm clothing for boat trips.
The water is so clear you can often see 6 to 14 meters (20 to 46 feet) down. This transparency makes it one of the clearest lakes in the entire Altai mountain range.
