Altai Republic, Russian republic in Western Siberia.
The Altai Republic lies in southern Siberia and spans high mountain chains, deep valleys and open steppe country. Dense woodlands alternate with glacial lakes and shape a varied natural setting across the territory.
The territory formed the Oyrot Autonomous Oblast within the Soviet Union from 1922 and evolved into a separate republic in 1992. The shift brought greater recognition for indigenous culture and regional governance structures.
Local Altai communities practice throat singing and recite epic tales in yurts that welcome travelers. Seasonal rituals marking solstice and harvest take place at mountain shrines and connect people to the natural cycles of the land.
Travelers arrive through the airport at Gorno-Altaisk in the northern part of the territory. Between June and September mountain roads remain free of snow and conditions suit longer journeys over gravel routes.
The Ukok Plateau in the southeast holds tombs in frozen ground that contain clothing and tools from nomadic horsemen. Archaeologists uncovered a mummified woman with tattoos and elaborate grave goods dating back more than 2000 years.
