Bukhtarma Reservoir, Large reservoir in East Kazakhstan Region, Kazakhstan
Bukhtarma Reservoir spreads across a wide water surface with many bays and sits on the Irtysh River in eastern Kazakhstan. Pine forests grow along the shores, and sandy beaches alternate with rocky sections.
Engineers finished building this reservoir in 1960 to supply water for two power plants on the Irtysh. The construction changed the landscape and created a new body of water in the region.
Locals call this body of water their sea and have built recreation centers all around its edge. Visitors share the shore with families who come here to swim and fish throughout the warmer months.
Travelers reach the water by bus or train to Novaya Bukhtarma station from Ust-Kamenogorsk, then continue by taxi. The best time to visit runs from May through September when the weather is warm enough for swimming.
The water holds several fish species including ide, pike perch, pike, carp, and trout. Anglers travel from across the country to cast their lines at these shores.
