Gebler Glacier, Glacier system in Altai Republic, Russia.
The Gebler Glacier is a glacier in the Altai Mountains of the Altai Republic, in southern Siberia, Russia. It lies on the slopes of the Belukha massif and forms part of the Katun glacier system, one of the largest in the region.
The glacier was first described scientifically in 1835 by Friedrich Wilhelm Gebler, a German naturalist working in Russia, and later named after him. Since then, it has been studied by researchers interested in the dynamics of mountain ice in central Asia.
The Katun River, born from this glacier, holds a deep meaning for the indigenous Altai people who live in the valleys below. The river appears in local oral traditions and continues to shape the daily life of nearby communities.
A visit requires a special permit, and it is worth contacting local authorities well in advance since rules can change. July to September offers the most stable conditions for mountain travel in this area.
The Gebler Glacier is considered one of the sources of the Katun River, which goes on to become one of the longest river systems in Siberia. At the glacier's snout, meltwater exposes bare rock surfaces that would otherwise remain hidden under the ice.
