The human variety shows itself in the everyday speech of towns and villages where Kazakh Russian and Ukrainian are spoken side by side. Shared festivals and markets bring the different groups together with traditional dishes and craft skills exchanged.
Roads connect the larger cities with Oskemen forming the main hub. Travelers should consider weather patterns since the elevation differences affect temperature and road conditions.
The highest point reaches more than four thousand five hundred meters elevation and rises above much of the surrounding land. The border position with Russia and China makes this stretch a crossing point for different trade flows.
