The monument represents the maritime heritage of Naryan-Mar and serves as a gathering place for ceremonies honoring seafaring and Arctic expedition veterans.
The memorial was relocated to Victory Park on Saprygina Street in 2020, where visitors can access information panels about regional maritime history.
From 328 people aboard the convoy vessels attacked by U-209, only 23 survived, including crew member Lazar Khozyainov who attended the memorial's inauguration.
