During World War II, over 1000 Nenets reindeer herders and 6000 reindeer from the Autonomous Okrug region served in specialized transport battalions on the Karelian Front.

The memorial represents the contribution of indigenous Nenets people who used their traditional reindeer herding skills to support military operations in Arctic conditions.

The monument stands as a public memorial site, open year-round, where visitors can learn about the military history of reindeer transport units.

These battalions transported 10,412 wounded soldiers to safety and delivered 18,000 tons of military supplies using reindeer-pulled sledges capable of carrying 300 kilograms each.
