Богоявленский собор, Orthodox cathedral in Naryan-Mar, Russia
Bogoyavlensky Cathedral (Epiphany Cathedral) is an Orthodox wooden church in the center of Naryan-Mar, built from Siberian cedar. It has a main upper sanctuary, a lower chapel, and a separate wooden bell tower standing nearby.
Construction started in 1996 under priest Vladimir Novikov and took nine years to finish. It was the first Orthodox church built in this northern city after the Soviet period, when religious life had been suspended.
The cathedral serves as the spiritual heart for Orthodox communities across the region, drawing the faithful to liturgical celebrations. Visitors experience ancient religious traditions that come alive through the architecture and ritual practices here.
The cathedral stands in the center of Naryan-Mar and is visible from a distance, making it easy to find on foot. As in any active place of worship, visitors are expected to dress modestly and keep quiet during services.
Siberian cedar was chosen for this building because the wood resists frost and moisture far better than most other timber. Even after years of extreme cold, the planks hold their shape without warping.
