Petrovsky Island, River island in Saint Petersburg, Russia
Petrovsky Island is a landmass in the Neva River delta of Saint Petersburg, surrounded by the Malaya Neva, Malaya Nevka, and Zhdanovka rivers. It spans roughly 1.37 square kilometers and has an elongated shape with multiple zones serving different purposes.
The island received its name in 1710 when Tsar Peter the Great claimed it as his property, having previously been called Stolbovy or Pattisaari. The Petrovsky Stadium was built between 1924 and 1925 on its southeastern tip and became a center for city sports.
The Saint Petersburg Yacht Club, founded in 1860, operates from the western section and keeps alive a long maritime tradition. Today you can still feel the connection to water sports that has shaped the island for more than a century and a half.
Three bridges connect the island to neighboring areas: Bolshoy Petrovsky Bridge to Krestovsky Island, Betancourt Bridge to Dekabristov Island, and Maly Petrovsky Bridge. You can walk around the island easily and access different sections without difficulty.
The Petrovsky Stadium at the southeastern tip reveals an unexpected Soviet heritage amid a green setting. With its distinctive 1920s design, it stands as a reminder of a different era in the city's development.
