Refuge des 11, Mountain refuge in Kabardino-Balkaria
Refuge des 11, also known as Priyut 11, was a mountain shelter in Kabardino-Balkaria, Russia, situated at high altitude. It functioned as a stopping point and acclimatization station for climbers making their way toward Mount Elbrus.
The shelter was founded in 1932 and served for decades as an important stop for mountaineers pursuing their goals. Eventually it was destroyed by an avalanche and no longer stands.
The name honored eleven climbers and reflected the spirit of camaraderie that defined the mountaineering community of that era. It represented how climbers viewed themselves as part of a shared endeavor in the high mountains.
The location was at high altitude, requiring a gradual climb with adequate time for physical adjustment before moving higher. Visitors should be aware that the structure no longer exists and only historical traces may remain in the area.
The shelter played a part in early Soviet mountaineering achievements and marked an important milestone for many climbers. Its story remains connected to how alpine exploration developed in the Soviet era.
