KGO Observatory, Scientific observatory in Karachay-Cherkessia, Russia.
The KGO Observatory is a research facility in the Caucasus Mountains situated at approximately 2100 meters elevation. The station operates with specialized telescopes and instruments designed for observing celestial objects and conducting astronomical measurements.
Moscow State University established this research facility in 2014 to expand astronomical research in the region. The project emerged from the need to create observation capabilities in higher-altitude areas of the North Caucasus.
The observatory operates within the multicultural territory of Karachay-Cherkessia, where Muslim and Orthodox Christian communities maintain their traditions.
The site is difficult to reach due to its remote mountain position and requires advance planning for a visit. Visitors should prepare for cold temperatures and possible poor weather conditions at higher elevations.
The high mountain position reduces light pollution significantly and allows for clear observations of the sky. This natural isolation makes the location excellent for detecting faint astronomical objects.
