Samarskaya Luka National Park, National park in Samara Oblast, Russia
Samarskaya Luka is a national park located along a wide bend of the Volga River in Samara Oblast, where the river curves around the Zhiguli Mountains. The area includes mixed forests on rolling hills, open meadows along river valleys, and steep limestone slopes that rise from the flat surroundings.
Conservationists and researchers called for protection of the Zhiguli region beginning in the early 1900s, but the park was officially established only in 1984. Since then, the area has been managed as part of a larger biosphere reserve linking several protected zones along the middle Volga.
The territory includes thirty-three rural settlements where local communities maintain traditional agricultural practices and celebrate regional customs through seasonal festivals.
Travelers need a permit from park management to hike outside public paths, which can be arranged at designated entry points. Guided walks start at several trailheads on the edge of the park and lead on marked routes to viewpoints and natural landmarks.
The Zhiguli region is home to nearly 290 species of land vertebrates and a plant diversity that reflects several climate zones within a small area. Some plants growing here are otherwise found only in mountain regions much farther away.
