Senatskaya Tower, Fortified tower in Red Square, Moscow, Russia
The Senatskaya Tower is a four-sided stone structure within the Moscow Kremlin topped with a pyramid roof and gilded weather vane. It measures about 34 meters tall and contains interior passage chambers connecting the fortified complex to Red Square.
The tower was built in 1491 by Italian architect Pietro Antonio Solari as part of the Kremlin's defensive walls. It received its current name in the late 1700s after the Kremlin Senate moved into a newly constructed building nearby.
A memorial plaque on the tower's wall honors fighters who died during the October Revolution. It remains a place where visitors pause to reflect on this significant moment in the city's past.
The tower cannot be entered by visitors as it is not open to the public, but can be viewed from outside. You can see it clearly from Red Square and from the surrounding Kremlin walkways.
The tower sits directly behind Lenin's Mausoleum and forms part of a distinctive trio with two neighboring towers along the Kremlin wall. This positioning makes it a favorite spot for photographers exploring the square.
