Selenginsky Fort, Military fortress in Selenginsky District, Republic of Buryatia, Russia.
Selenginsky Fort is a fortress structure built on the right bank of the Selenga River near present-day Novoselenginsk. The site retains portions of its stone defensive walls and foundation structures that reveal its original layout and defensive design.
The fort was founded in 1666 by Gavril Lovtsov as the first Russian settlement along the Selenga River in this region. It withstood a two-month siege in 1688, demonstrating its importance as a defensive outpost during the period of Russian expansion eastward.
This fort marks a turning point where Russian settlers began establishing themselves in the Transbaikal region and created a lasting presence far from European Russia. The local history museum and remaining structures tell the story of how people from different backgrounds lived together in this remote outpost.
The site can be reached from the modern town of Novoselenginsk and offers views of the ruins from the riverbank and surrounding valley. Visitors should wear appropriate footwear since the ground is uneven, and weather conditions vary seasonally in this region.
Before the fort declined into ruins, it was the largest settlement east of Lake Baikal in the 18th century with thousands of residents. Major fires in the late 1700s triggered its downfall and show how rapidly a thriving community can disappear.
