Stavropol Local Museum, Regional museum in Stavropol, Russia
The Stavropol Local Museum is a regional museum in Stavropol, Russia, holding collections on the history, nature, and cultures of the North Caucasus. The exhibition covers several sections with artifacts, documents, photographs, and natural history specimens.
The museum was founded in 1905 to document the history and nature of the North Caucasus region. In 1927 it merged with the City Museum of visual educational materials, which considerably expanded its collections.
The collection displays crafts, clothing, and everyday objects from different peoples of the North Caucasus, giving visitors a direct sense of how life looked across the region. The range of objects from so many different communities is one of the most noticeable things about the display.
The museum is easy to explore at your own pace, with clear signage throughout the building to help with orientation. It is worth setting aside a good amount of time, as the collection covers many different areas.
One of the most unexpected objects in the collection is a nearly complete fossil skeleton of a southern elephant, over a million years old. This animal once roamed the land where Stavropol now stands, showing how different the region looked in prehistoric times.
