Solntsevo, Railway station in Solntsevo District, Moscow, Russia.
Solntsevo is a metro station on the Solntsevskaya line in the Solntsevo District of Moscow, built with an island platform enclosed by perforated concrete walls and ceiling panels. The holes in the concrete let light pass through and cast shifting patterns of brightness across the floor and surfaces below.
The station opened in 2018 as part of an extension of the Solntsevskaya line into the western outskirts of Moscow. It was built to bring outlying residential neighborhoods closer to the rest of the metro network.
The station design incorporates references to traditional dacha houses through perforated concrete panels in entrance pavilions that filter natural sunlight.
The station is fully accessible for wheelchair users and straightforward to get around, with clear signs throughout. It sits at a busy road junction, which makes it easy to reach several nearby residential areas on foot.
The name Solntsevo means sun in Russian, and the architects built this idea into the station's lighting design from the start. Artificial lights mimic the effect of sunlight breaking through a lattice, which sets this station apart from most others on the Moscow metro.
