Spaso-Borodinsky Monastery, Orthodox monastery in Semenovskoe, Russia.
Spaso-Borodinsky Monastery is an Eastern Orthodox monastery in the Moscow region, enclosed by stone walls with four corner towers and several chapels arranged across its grounds. The central church is dedicated to the Holy Savior Icon Not Made by Hands.
The monastery was founded in 1839 by Margarita Tuchkova, widow of General Alexander Tuchkov, who died at Borodino in 1812. What began as a personal memorial chapel gradually grew into a full monastic community over the following decades.
The monastery stands on the former battlefield of Borodino, and visitors can attend memorial services that are still held there for soldiers who died in the 1812 battle. The place feels less like a typical religious site and more like a place of collective memory.
The monastery is close to the Borodino battlefield, which is open as an outdoor museum, making it easy to combine both sites in a single visit. Comfortable footwear is recommended, as the grounds are spread out and best explored on foot.
The monastery grounds contain restored earthwork fortifications from 1812 known as fleches, which were reconstructed for the centenary of the battle. Walking along these structures gives a clear sense of how the fighting was laid out across the land that day.
