Chelybinskaya GRES, Power station in Chelyabinsk, Russia.
Chelybinskaya GRES is a condensation power station in Chelyabinsk that produces electricity through thermal conversion and feeds it into the regional grid. The plant sits on the edge of the city, visible from several directions, with tall chimneys and a network of high-voltage transmission structures rising above the surrounding area.
The station was built in 1927 as one of the first large industrial facilities in the Ural region under the early Soviet industrialization drive. During World War II, it played a key role in powering the defense industry that had been relocated to the area.
The power station shows constructivist design with clean geometric lines and large industrial windows typical of early Soviet factory buildings. Walking around the outside of the site, a visitor can take in these architectural details without entering the facility.
The station can be viewed from the surrounding streets without entering the site, and the main structures are visible from a distance. Daytime is the best time to observe the details of the buildings and the transmission towers clearly.
Chelybinskaya GRES is on Russia's tentative list for UNESCO World Heritage status, recognized as an example of early Soviet industrial architecture still in active use. This makes it one of the few operating power plants that is also acknowledged as a heritage site.
