Church of Elijah the Prophet in Cherkizovo, Eastern Orthodox church in Preobrazhenskoye District, Russia
The Church of Elijah the Prophet in Cherkizovo is an Eastern Orthodox church in the Preobrazhenskoye District of Moscow, built in the Russian Revival style with a single dome and a separate bell tower. The building has a compact, cube-like form and sits close to Cherkizovsky Pond.
The original wooden church was founded in 1370 by Ilia Ozakov, a christened Tatar, making it one of the older religious sites in the Moscow area. It was rebuilt in stone in the early 1690s, giving the site the more permanent form that visitors see today.
The church is named after the prophet Elijah, one of the most revered figures in Orthodox Christianity. Services are still held regularly, and visitors can observe locals gathering for worship in a setting that feels very much alive.
The church is easy to reach on foot from Cherkizovsky Pond, and the surrounding streets are straightforward to navigate. If a service is in progress when you arrive, it is good practice to move quietly and dress modestly out of respect for worshippers.
The cemetery next to the church holds the grave of Ivan Koreysha, a historical figure who inspired characters in the works of both Nikolai Leskov and Fyodor Dostoevsky. Few visitors realize that this quiet churchyard connects directly to two of the most celebrated names in Russian literature.
