Church of Saint John the Evangelist in Kostroma

The Church of Saint John the Evangelist is an Eastern Orthodox place of worship in Kostroma featuring traditional Russian architectural traits. The building displays characteristic window frames and distinctive dome structures that define its exterior appearance.

Construction of the current building began in 1645 and finished in 1651, replacing an earlier structure from the 13th century. After years of serving other purposes, the building reopened for religious services in 1946.

The church is named after Saint John the Evangelist and displays wall paintings created by local artists between 1650 and 1652. These frescoes shape the interior today and reflect the artistic skill that existed in the region at that time.

The building underwent substantial restoration work between 1967 and 1969 to improve its condition. Visitors should be aware that this is an active house of worship and appropriate conduct is expected.

From 1964 to 1991, the building served as the cathedral of Kostroma diocese and housed a sacred icon. This role ended after the Soviet Union's collapse when the region's religious landscape changed.
