The Church of Saint John the Evangelist features traditional Russian architectural elements with detailed window frames and distinctive domed structures.
Construction of the current church building began in 1645 and concluded in 1651, replacing an earlier structure from the 13th century.
The interior walls display religious frescoes created by artists Vasili Zapokrovsky and Gur Nikitin between 1650 and 1652.
The church reopened for religious services in 1946 after years of alternative use and underwent substantial restoration from 1967 to 1969.
From 1964 to 1991, the building served as the cathedral of Kostroma diocese and housed the Feodorovskaya Icon of the Mother of God.
