Yamal LNG, Natural gas terminal in Sabetta, Russia
Yamal LNG is a natural gas terminal in Sabetta, located in the far northwestern reaches of Russia on the Yamal Peninsula. The facility stretches along the coast of the Gulf of Ob and includes several large production units, storage tanks, and a dedicated loading station for vessels.
Construction began in 2013 after investors secured a license for the South Tambey Field in 2005. The first production unit started operations in December 2017, followed by additional units in subsequent years.
The terminal represents an international collaboration between Russian, French, and Chinese companies, marking a shift in global energy partnerships and resource development.
The terminal operates in a remote Arctic region with extreme weather conditions that require specially equipped transport for access. Operations continue throughout the year thanks to infrastructure adapted for permafrost and icy conditions.
Specialized Arc7 ice-class tankers transport the liquefied gas and can break through ice up to 2.5 meters (8 feet) thick. These vessels enable shipping even during the harshest Arctic winter months when waters are fully frozen.
