Sabetta, Arctic industrial settlement on Yamal Peninsula, Russia.
Sabetta is an industrial settlement on the Yamal Peninsula in Yamalsky District, Russia. The facility includes terminals for processing and shipping liquefied natural gas along with associated infrastructure for Arctic operations.
The facility was built starting in 2013 and entered operations in 2018 as part of developing Arctic gas reserves. Construction proceeded under difficult climatic conditions and included building port installations in the bay.
The settlement takes its name from a nearby cape and grew specifically as a workers' camp for the gas liquefaction facility. Residents live here in multi-week shift cycles and then return to other regions.
The settlement sits far from regular transport links and is reached mainly by charter flight or ship. Access is generally restricted to gas industry personnel.
From 2017 onward, ships can use the route in winter without constant icebreaker escort, which changed transport in the far north. The facility processes gas from one of the largest Arctic reserves.
